Spy Wednesday (Holy Wednesday)
Spy Wednesday is the Wednesday before Easter Sunday in the Christian liturgical calendar. It commemorates the day Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin, leading to Jesus’ crucifixion. The term “Spy Wednesday” is derived from the biblical account of Judas agreeing to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, which he received on this day. It’s a day of reflection on betrayal and the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.
Mostly celebrated by the Catholic Church and most protestant churches.
On this day on which Jesus was anointed with spikenard during a meal (Matthew 26:6–13). The day is sometimes called “Spy Wednesday” since it is traditionally thought of as the day Judas conspired with local authorities to betray Jesus (Matthew 26:14–16).
