About
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s iconic blue hero, created in 1991 to give the company a bold, fast‑moving mascot who could stand toe‑to‑toe with Nintendo’s Mario. Defined by his super‑speed, rebellious confidence, and instinct to protect the innocent, Sonic races through worlds battling the schemes of Dr. Eggman, a power‑hungry scientist who turns animals into robots. His gameplay introduced momentum‑driven platforming that emphasized speed over precision, helping Sonic become a defining figure of 1990s gaming culture.
Over the decades, Sonic has expanded far beyond his original 16‑bit roots. He’s starred in dozens of games, multiple animated series, long‑running comic lines, and a successful live‑action film franchise that introduced him to a new generation. His supporting cast—Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and others—has grown into a full universe of characters, each adding depth to the franchise’s world. Today, Sonic remains one of the most recognizable and influential video game characters ever created, a symbol of style, speed, and attitude.
